David Beckham is a man with distinguished style. Having experimented with tricky-to-pull-off trends in his early years—think, sarongs and Gucci leather jumpsuits—the former soccer star has made slick suiting and strong tailoring his sartorial calling card. This was evident last night at the Clocktower at the New York Edition hotel in New York City where Beckham, dressed impeccably in a pinstripe suit, celebrated his latest fashion partnership as an ambassador for heritage watch brand Tudor. “I’ve always been lucky to be part of brands that have been around for a long time and have that history,” said Beckham, who is also helping to revive British menswear label Kent & Curwen.
So what is it about Tudor’s distinctive aesthetic that speaks to him? “I like watches to work with jeans and a T-shirt or a suit and tie,” he says. “Obviously it has to work well and keep time because I travel to many places.” And those places include the multiple cities that the Beckhams call home—London, Los Angeles, and more recently, New York where his eldest son Brooklyn is attending university. With the holiday season approaching, what does Beckham like to wear for fancy outings with the family? “Most of the time, I’m in a nice tailored trousers, a white crisp shirt, and usually a Ralph [Lauren] velvet jacket. I keep it very traditional.” That isn’t to say that he doesn’t indulge in a casual moment here and there. “At some point [pajamas] happen and they’re silk, new [ones] for Christmas.” As for the rest of his holiday gift wish list, it's much less extravagant than you’d expect. “Victoria turned around to me the other day and said, ‘What can I get you?’ I said all I want are these Scott-Nichol socks. I bought them at Fortnum and Mason [and] they’re these amazing.” He says. “I think a pair of socks is something you don’t realize how nice it feels and look when your trousers ride up and people notice."
