Indigo, with its mysterious and calming oceanic depths, is the perfect colour for summer. Its deep bluish-purplish colour recalls the rich, inky tapestry of the night summer sky, or of cool, deep ocean waters, instantly refreshing for a sultry, humid summer day. Its rustic sophisticate vibe captures the casual and relaxed style of the summer season - from clothing, denim, accessories to home decor, taking the world by storm with its deep hue. In fashion and home decor it lends itself well to bohemian, casual, classic and formal lifestyles, pairing well with many other neutral or bold, bright colours. Indigo started out as a spice and plant in India, and the harvested leaves of the Indigofera plant are soaked in water to release indican. Under the right summer temperature and humidity, the indican ferments with other plant enzymes and the resultant indoxyl is left to dry in sufficient sunlight, oxidising and coagulating into the blue indigo, used to dye cloth.

Natural Regal Elegance

Dating back to 5,000 years ago, indigo is one of the oldest natural pigments known to mankind, used by ancient Romans, Greeks, Europeans and aristocracy. In Dali, Guizhou, China, the Dong village tradition is to grow their own indigo plants to dye, by hand, cloth for their traditional ethnic costumes; while the natural centuries-old Japanese indigo dyeing techniques of aizome, where the process for dyeing fabrics and threads with an indigo solution fermented for 100 days is done repeatedly, deepening the colour of the dye little by little until it becomes a beautiful “Japan Blue”. For the Japanese, the intensity of the indigo changes based on factors such as how long the fabric mixes with the dye or the way it is dipped into the dye vats, making each object dyed with sukumo indigo unique. Tie dye and Japanese Shibori are also created by tying, rolling, stitching and folding white cloth before dyeing - the tied-up portions of cloth remain white while the exposed areas turn blue in the indigo vat. In India, indigo is often paired with prints to create unique and mysterious patterns that are exotic.

Indigo has always been favoured by the fashion industry for its quiet blue depths, soothing on the eyes. It has more layers as a colour as compared to the monochromatic black. It is the colour of refined temperament and refined elegance, and it is easy to attain a sense of the exquisite when you use indigo. Indigo recalls the relaxing sea, with its broad, inclusive and serene character.

TUSK by Commune

The indigo colour palette is thus a perfect complement to Commune’s Tusk modern industrial series; the stylish juxtaposition of masculine cool metal and rustic wood is enhanced by this elegant colour, harmoniously creating a space full of depth and charm. Inspired by wine crates, the Tusk collection features solid American oak with black powder-coated mild steel for a bold, casual rustic aesthetic or similar to the industrial cafe look. Indigo wall colours or indigo-coloured home furnishing and accessories could soften the Tusk series in the living room without compromising its unique standalone design identity.
