Assessment involves a combination of simple on-site inspections and precise measurements using tools; data on appearance and thickness are used to determine whether replacement thresholds have been reached.
I. Measuring Tools
Basic: Steel ruler, depth gauge, vernier caliper;
Precision: Digital vernier caliper, dial indicator.
Pre-measurement: Open the caliper jaws and clean the backing plate surface to remove steel pipe filings, oil, and debris.
II. Two Measurement Methods
1. Thickness Measurement (Primary Method)
Measure the original thickness of a new backing plate and record it as the baseline value;
Measure 3–5 points each in the central clamping/load-bearing zone and at the edges;
Record the actual remaining thickness.
Replacement Reference Thresholds:
Polyurethane/Rubber backing plates: Replace if wear exceeds 30% of the thickness, or if the thinnest local point is less than half the original thickness; e.g., if the original thickness is 20mm and a local area wears down to below 10mm, replacement is mandatory.
2. Groove/Depression Depth Measurement
Steel pipes create grooves in the center of the backing plate; use a depth gauge to measure the depth of these depressions.
Groove depth > 2–3mm: Friction decreases significantly, leading to a high risk of slippage; replacement is recommended. Even if the overall thickness is sufficient, replacement is necessary if deep local grooves cause uneven load distribution.
3. Observation of Planar Deformation (Supplementary Method)
Compare the height difference between the unworn areas at the ends of the plate and the central clamping zone; if the center is noticeably depressed, or if the plate shows signs of bulging (due to compression) or warping, replacement is recommended even if the thickness remains acceptable.
III. Consider Operational Conditions Alongside Data
Replace immediately if any of the following occur, even if the thickness has not yet reached the alarm threshold:
1. Surface is polished and shiny; the friction surface has worn to a mirror-like finish;
2. Cracking, chunking (loss of material), or localized delamination;
3. Slippage of the clamped steel pipe, or visible indentation/damage marks on the pipe. IV. On-site Inspection Procedures (Quick Guide for Workshop Operators)
1. Fully open the gripper jaws and confirm power-off safety;
2. Clean the surface of the backing plate;
3. Measure the remaining thickness at multiple points and measure the groove depth;
4. Compare with the thickness of a new backing plate and record the data in the log;
5. If the wear threshold is reached, request a spare part in advance and schedule a shutdown for replacement.
