Palletizing gripper cylinders operate under high-frequency, heavy-load conditions in environments with significant metal debris. The priority is to distinguish between seal failure and damage to the cylinder barrel or piston rod body; body damage necessitates cylinder replacement, whereas seal failure can be repaired.
I. In the following cases → Prioritize replacing the seal repair kit; replacing the entire cylinder assembly is unnecessary.
External leakage: Continuous air leakage at the piston rod or exhaust port, yet the piston rod surface remains smooth and free of scoring.
Internal leakage: Loss of clamping pressure or grip (dropping the workpiece) and reduced thrust; slow pressure drop during power-off holding tests, with no scoring on the inner cylinder wall.
Slight operational sticking/hesitation that resolves after cleaning the piston rod and replacing seals; the piston rod shows no scratches, pitting, or rust.
Aging cushion seals causing increased end-stroke impact; simply replacing the cushion seals resolves the issue.
II. If any of the following apply → The entire cylinder assembly must be replaced (seal replacement alone is insufficient).
Piston rod surface damage (scoring, scratches, pitting, or rust craters): Metal debris scratches the rod, causing new dust wipers and rod seals to tear and leak within days, leading to repeated repair cycles.
Scoring on the inner cylinder wall: Disassembly reveals scratches or scoring marks inside the barrel; the piston seal repeatedly tears, causing recurring internal leakage.
Severe wear on the cylinder guide bushing: Excessive piston rod play or wobbling during operation; this causes lateral off-center loading, poor clamping alignment, accelerated wear on one-sided backing plates, and potential scratching of the steel tubes.
Cylinder body deformation, end cap cracks, stripped threads, or housing damage.
Severe operational sticking or jamming: The cylinder remains stuck even after adjusting the air supply and cleaning, preventing smooth extension and retraction.
Repeated repair failures: Leakage or internal leakage recurs less than a month after seal replacement (indicating underlying damage to the barrel or piston rod). III. Simple On-Site Inspection Methods (No cylinder disassembly required; rapid assessment on the production floor)
1. External Leakage Check
Extend the cylinder and apply soapy water to the piston rod area; if bubbles form continuously, the rod seal is worn. Inspect the piston rod surface: if smooth, replace the seal; if scratched or pitted, replace the entire cylinder.
2. Internal Leakage/Pressure Retention Test (Critical for gripper cylinders)
Clamp a steel pipe with the cylinder, maintain the clamping state, and close the air intake valve to hold pressure:
If pressure drops rapidly and the gripper slowly loosens within a short time, internal leakage is occurring; disassemble and inspect the cylinder bore for scoring to decide whether to repair or replace.
3. Wobble/Play Check
Manually push and pull the piston rod radially to check for movement:
If there is significant radial clearance or noticeable wobbling, the guide bushing is worn; replacing the cylinder is recommended.
4. Operation and Noise Assessment
Abnormal noise or impact sounds during extension/retraction, with no improvement after adjusting the cushioning;
Smooth operation under no-load conditions, but weak performance or failure to clamp the steel pipe tightly under load → High probability of internal leakage.
IV. Cost-Effectiveness Assessment for Palletizing Lines
Standard small cylinders: Spare parts are inexpensive; repeated repairs cause excessive downtime, so many sites simply replace the unit with a new one to save on labor hours for disassembly and inspection.
Large-bore, heavy-duty gripper cylinders: High cost; provided the piston rod and cylinder bore are intact, prioritize replacing the seal kit.
For continuous production lines or during peak order seasons: Even if only the seal is damaged, keep a spare cylinder assembly on hand for immediate replacement during a failure, and repair the defective cylinder after the shift ends.
